  1. Ways to deal with vaginal dryness during menopause

    Comment
Many women will have suffered from vaginal dryness by the time they experience menopause. Menopause is one of the main causes of uncomfortable symptoms such as burning, itching and pain during sexual intercourse. Although it is also possible for younger women to suffer from vaginal dryness, the reduction of oestrogen levels brought on by menopause is generally the cause for these unpleasant symptoms. Reduced oestrogen levels lead to a lack of adequate moisture in a woman’s genital area. There is a decrease in the amount of milky white fluid released by a woman’s body to protect the genital area. This means that the mucosa is more susceptible to bacteria and viruses as well as a higher rate of infection. The sexual organs also undergo a change. This can include vaginal atrophy, meaning...
  2. Breast Cancer – What Does it Feel Like?

    Comment
Article by Dr Kathleen Thompson   As a doctor I found having breast cancer a difficult challenge. But at least I knew ‘the system’. It made me realise how hard it must be for people without the benefit of a medical background. So I wrote an award-winning book. My aim was to provide all the key information for people embarking on this bewildering journey, in an easily absorbable format. So I mingled my story with factual information. The chapters are short but pertinent, with a summary and further information box. Amongst many other things, I talked about what it feels like to have cancer. Here’s an excerpt, I hope you find it helpful: The ensuing weeks and months after my diagnosis were an emotional roller-coaster. Looking back, I was mainly in denial....

    Comment
Article by Ceri Wheeldon We might want to improve our fitness over 50 but we  don’t all want to join gyms, much preferring to exercise in the comfort and privacy of our own homes. I have chosen a selection of some of my favourite fitness DVDs – they have not been developed specifically for women over 50, but they are DVDs that either I use myself…or have friends who do…and as we are all over 50 we think that these are the ones we like to share. // < !]>Amazon.co.uk Widgets   Callanetics One of the originals..and still one of the best in my opinion. Callanetics – 10 Years Younger...
  4. Meryl Streep talks about her role as Florence Foster Jenkins

    Comment
Article by Ceri Wheeldon If you haven’t yet seen Florence Foster Jenkins…it’s not too late. Starring Meryl Streep  as Florence and Hugh Grant as her husband, it follows the rise (and fall) of socialite Florence, who believes she can sing and realises her ambition to sing at Carnegie Hall – with not quite the reception she had anticipated. Here is what Meryl had to say about playing this fascinating character! The film is full of humour and warmth. Meryl Steep as always is superb, and Hugh Grant, despite all his character’s faults , is still likeable as Florence’s husband. As he says in the film ‘Ours is a very happy home’ ….despite his lifestyle which most would find difficult to condone, although as the...
  5. Never too late: 73 year old grandmother named as most inspiring sport and fitness role model

    Comment
Eddie Brocklesby, a 73-year-old grandmother from Vauxhall, has today been named as the nation’s most inspiring and dedicated sport and fitness role model after winning The Gym Group’s Unsung Heroes of Sport & Fitness Awards.  The awards seek to recognise incredible individuals in the local community who have motivated women to enjoy the benefits of physical activity. Fitness champion Eddie, who was a social worker for 50 years, was nominated for the award for setting up charity Silverfit.  Established in 2013 with just five people and now nearly 1,000 in 18 different venues, the London-based charity’s aim is to promote physical activity and wellbeing in today’s ageing population, enabling older people to make new friends and lead an independent life for...

I have been using the Cult 51 night cream for the past 3 weeks and all I can say is ‘wow’ From the first application, the skin is given an immediate boost, I woke up the following morning with my skin feeling as though it had received the benefit of a salon facial- 3 weeks later and my skin is looking visibly better, with my crows feet look far softer – there had been a definite...

  9. Angie Best models new swimwear range at 63

    Comment
Article by Fab after Fifty. How often do we comment on retailers using young models to sell to clothes to our age group? Well at least one retailer has had the confidence to change that. Retailer JD Williams has announced 63 year old Angie Best, model and former wife of George Best, as the face of its swimwear range by Melissa Odabash. Shot on location in Portugal, the retailer and Angie insisted on minimal image retouching to inspire women to feel comfortable and confident when baring all in a bikini. The iconic model has modelled the 10 piece collection of bikinis, one-pieces and cover ups from Sea by Melissa Odabash – the first swimwear range created specifically to fit and flatter the figure of the 50 plus woman. As a leading fashion retailer for...
  10. 50plus London Fashion Week Event

    Comment
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Models from Mrs Robinson Management: Evon, Brucella, Sylvia, Tanya, Stefanie, Sharron, Valerie, Elsa, Tracey   I have to admit that when I was invited to the first 50plus fashion week event I was in two minds as to whether or not to go – I get so tired of being inundated with press releases from brands saying that they want to show me clothes that my ‘readers will love’, only to be confronted by a sea of images of frumpy, uninspiring clothes, that I tend to beat a hasty retreat, but I’m glad I went. It was a fabulous event and I was pleasantly surprised. Held at the Cafe Royal it was a collaboration between online retailer JD Williams and London College of fashion-...
