  1. Dresses with Sleeves Dress 28- the best of both worlds

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon There are times when I would love to wear something a little less structured, but hate being swamped by volumes of fabric. As I am a little busty I prefer dresses which are fitted under the bust or I run the risk of looking like a walking tent. I’m hoping you’ll love dress 28 of the 2014 dresses with sleeves challenge. I think this dress from Isabi offers the best of both worlds. It is fitted to the waist but has a wonderful draped skirt. I was tempted by the sleeveless version of this dress earlier – but as I hate showing my arms was thrilled when they introduced the version with sleeves into the range. I think it’s...
  2. What to wear under sleeveless dresses

Article by Ceri Wheeldon I know that I am always trying to feature dresses with sleeves, but today I am taking a slight departure – what about if we want to get more wear from our existing wardrobe including sleeveless dresses yet still keep our arms covered – without wearing shrugs or cardigans. I also find that sleeveless dresses with the option to layer (either under or over) are really versatile for weekends away when you want to travel light but are a little unsure of the weather! We all think about what we can wear OVER our sleeveless dresses when in fact we often forget we can wear things UNDER as well. Here are a couple of the options that I like to get more out of the clothes I already own...
  3. Dress 24 – nautical but nice

nautical dress with short sleevesDress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon

Dress 24 of the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves  Challenge. Sleeves don’t have to be long to offer some cover. In summer we don’t always want to wear long sleeves – but a short or cap sleeve can look a little more polished than a shift dress.

I really like this crisp looking navy and white jersey dress from Apanage. It looks wonderfully chic for a weekend city break – slip on a navy blazer and it’s great for work.

The scoop neck is flattering – the white waistband has a pull through rope belt and eyelet trim.

I think this a fabulous take on the nautical look.

    A winner!

The Apanage Contrast Dress is £139 from Gray and Osbourn

  4. Day 23 – Dress to create an hourglass effect

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon For day 23 of the 2014 challenge  this dress with sleeves from Phase Eight is far from boring!  In fact it has a bit of everything thrown into the mix yet somehow still works! The Illusion panel of the skirt helps to create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette, and the ruching helps disguise tums and create a slimmer waistline. The Bodice effect top further enhance the hourglass effect – and the lace sleeves cover any wobbly arms. What more could you ask for? This dress slims, enhances and adds a bit of drama to be stylish over 50.   The Cara Dress is £110 at House of Fraser   ...
  5. Dresses with Sleeves Day 21 – Timeless with a twist!

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon One of the first dresses I featured on Fab after Fifty was a dress from Baukjen (called Isabella Oliver at the time). It was the first dress I had ever ordered online – and my first jersey dress with sleeves! I now have about 6 or 7 of their dresses – and they get worn all the time. Well today for Day 21 of the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves Challenge I’ve chosen another one from their current collection. I think this dress is really elegant and the asymmetrical hemline gives it a modern twist. The Claremont Dress has a scooped neckline, flattering draping to cover the tummy and hips, and a wrap effect skirt giving the dress a modern twist. I love it! It is simple yet...
  6. Day 20 Dresses with Sleeves Challenge – a dress to suit petite women

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon Since posting an Isabi dress on Day 19 of the 204 Dresses with Sleeves Challenge I have received a lot of messages from people saying they love the dress (it seems a lot of you are Isabi fans and have bought the dress in more than one colour!) but those who are petite have said that they are concerned that it will swamp them. I have checked, and Isabi do not have a shorter version of this particular dress at the moment- but they do have similar tunics to be worn with leggings – so although not 100%  a ‘dress with sleeves’ I thought I would respond to your questions with some alternative suggestions from the same designer and add the tunic below! For a...
  7. Dresses with Sleeves Day 19 – relaxed style

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon Sometimes you just want to wear something a little different. I love draped dresses for a more relaxed  style . I also like to discover new brands. For dress 19 of the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves Challenge  I have chosen the Simge dress (I have it in   blue) from Isabi –  it comes in a really wide range of colours. Although it’s draped the cut of the top creates an empire line when worn so it emphasises the slimmest part of your body before falling to create a really flattering silhouette. There are even hidden pockets in the folds. The 3/4 length sleeves are perfect for highlighting slim wrists and fabulous bracelets the scoop neckline elongates the neck. The dress is made from elastane jersey and falls really...
  8. Dresses with Sleeves Day 18 – Occasion Dressing

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon Something for special occasions on day 18 of the challenge. Lace is hugely popular at the moment and this blue sheath dress with a lace overlay and elbow length flutter sleeves is fabulous and feminine.  The sheath dress is body skimming rather than ‘bodycon’ . This dress would be fabulous for Ascot with a wide brimmed hat  – if you are attending the races and entering the Royal Enclosure you have to have the crown of your head covered –  for other events it would look terrific with a fascinator . Again a simple clutch bag would work well and understated jewellery in keeping with the floaty feminine effect of the sleeves. This dress by Adrianna Papell is £140 from ...
  9. Dresses with Sleeves – Day 17 A Timeless Classic in Red

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon Day 17 of the 2014 challenge – time for a classic. I love to find that one dress that can work for practically any occasion. I think this red Jaeger dress with sleeves fits the bill. It is perfectly plain – so can form a staple part of your wardrobe for many years- and is so simple in cut and style that accessories can really work to create a variety of looks – wear with a blazer for business, a simple necklace for lunch with friends or a dramatic statement necklace for the evening! It is timeless and can add a touch of elegance at any age – but especially over 50! Red Jaeger dress £150 from John Lewis     Just in...
  10. Dresses with Sleeves Challenge Day 16 – Sophisticated in lace

Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon A touch of glamour with this cocktail dress from Phase Eight for Day 16 of the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves Challenge. The ruching around the middle helps to disguise tums, while the contrast lace panels down the sides help create a the illusion of a slimmer silhouette. The sleeves are sheer which offer a lighter sophisticated look for special occasions – and make it a great dress for evening wear. Burgundy is less harsh than black for many skin tones. The deep ‘V’ neck elongate the neck and the ‘eyelash’ detail around the neck softens the neckline while giving it a luxurious feel. The empire line boddice helps to elongate the body. This dress is quite ‘busy’ yet somehow the tone on tone works to give the dress a...
