Book Review: Learning to Fly by Jane Lambert

Article by Ceri Wheeldon

Jane Lambert learning to fly book

Is it too late to follow your dream? That is what Emily Forsyth sets out to discover as she walks away from her life as an air stewardess and sells her comfortable home to follow her dream of becoming an actress in her 40s. With her long-term relationship failing Emily has to reinvent all aspects of her life.

The book explores  midlife reinvention, dreams and friendship as Emily comes to terms with the decisions she has made and the new life she has chosen to live , with some hits and misses along the way – on all fronts!

A fabulous read with lots of humour – as I read it I thought of it as being a Bridget Jones for Grownups…and  could  relate to many of the situations Emily found herself in. A lighthearted book which is certain to make you smile, but at the same time a book that makes you think…would you be brave enough to take the risk  to give up the life you know to do what you had always dreamt of.

As we follow Emily through her acting training, her attempts to make a living with various jobs as she keeps her dream alive, her rejections at auditions, her first on stage performance,  we see the uncertainty of having a career which forces you to live ‘in the moment’.

Jane lambert imageThe author Jane Lambert  gave up her job as cabin crew to become an actress and a writer- which is probably what makes her fictional character seem so real – and likeable! Read more about Jane’s midlife reinvention and the story behind the book.

This book flows so well it is hard to believe that this is Jane’s first book. I do hope there is a sequel!
